March
I'm excited to finally be looking towards starting my own front garden redesign. After the last few rainy months, it is something to look forward to ... and it's almost time to put the design into action!
April
Finally - it feels as if Spring has sprung!
There is much that can be done in the garden in April, including weeding and clearing beds, borders and pots, deadheading spring bulbs, sowing herbs and some salad leaves, sowing fruit and veg seeds and flowering companions in the veg plot, sowing grass seed to repair patches in a lawn, as well as creating some instant colour at the front of borders - and much more.
Enjoy the sunshine and the emerging shoots and flowers as they respond to the longer days and warming temperatures. But do remember not to get too carried away despite the April sunshine, as tender plants will still need some protection from late frosts.
At home, the front garden project has finally started. The digger has arrived and the dismantling of the old raised veg beds and front steps has begun.
May
With the recent weather we have been having, growth in the garden will be rapid, so now is the time to tie in new shoots of climbing plants, Hanging baskets can be planted up but would still benefit from being sheltered in a greenhouse or porch for a little longer. Harden off tender plants but also bring them in at night to protect them against the very chilly temperatures we are still having as there is still a risk of late frosts.
If you are fortunate enough to have a greenhouse, remember to open the vents and doors on warm days. Remember to keep thirsty plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes well watered.
There is so much more to be done in the garden in May. There is a special satisfaction in seeing it all come together and the longer, warmer evenings will give you a chance to sit and enjoy the results of your labours!
At home, the front garden transformation continues after a bit of a lull. Previously, the front garden and entrance just felt functional. The first phase of the redesign focused on clearing the space, and a retaining wall was built to define it. Now the gateway and steps are being rebuilt and repositioned to create a more welcoming flow, introducing structure and movement. I can't wait for the next phase!
